Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal so you can grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances while you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day”. In this book I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the founder of Grow With Joe, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
At the end of today’s podcast episode, I’m going to give you a prompt question to reflect on in your journal. The idea is to take one to five minutes to reflect on today’s lesson and write a minimum of one paragraph on how you can apply the lesson in your life. Your can use an actual journal, a word document like on Google Drive, or your note taking app like Evernote. The idea is that you’re actually thinking about how to process the information to help you improve your life.
In today’s episode, we’re are going to talk about how words and ideas can change the world, no matter what people tell you as Robin Williams said. I know personally, this quote is very true. If I didn’t seek out new ideas or words, then I wouldn’t have done the things that I’ve done before.
I especially love one liners because they are simple and get you to start taking some type of positive action. My favorite is hard choices, easy life, easy choices, hard life and the cost of having low value people in your life is your life. These one liners are simple reminders on how I should live life. I know when ever I want to take the easy choice, I just remind myself of the hard life quote and then I start taking some type of positive action.
How you communicate is very important if you want someone else to change. If you can use someone’s language, they are more likely to trust you. If you look at the final scene of 8 mile with Eminem, even though Eminem is one of the few white people in the crowd, he is able to use words that the crowd can identify with. He asks everyone from 313 put there hands up, which everyone in the crowd is from, he then references an old Snoop Dogg lyric that the crowd loves, and then says he came from a single house hold like many of the other people in the crowd.
Your words can show how you relate to folks and can inspire them to follow you or your recommendations and ends up changing your world. I know when I do financial planning, I have to use certain words that show empathy but causes people to take the right actions steps. If I do this, then I can change that person’s world for the better.
It’s also important to share ideas because they can change the world too. I get so many good ideas from the podcasts that I listen to, that they truly changed my world. Now I try to share ideas with other people to change their world. We live in the information economy right now and new ideas are the new currency. Every day I try to write ten ideas every day that I can use in my life. Some are bad and some are good, but I just need keep the new ideas coming. You just need one idea that you can implement in your life to change your life forever.
I have an aunt that kept saying that her town needed a hot dog shop, and now she does pretty good with it. She provides visitors another place they can stop by and eat and make their journey a little bit better. It just started with an idea with a little push from family members to get her going. I was talking to my older sister over Thanksgiving and we were talking about how we wished we learned Spanish and now a year later, I’m in Mexico, getting one percent better every day with my Spanish. I know once I learn Spanish and start making content in Spanish, it’s going to impact the lives of a lot of people with financial planning and development coaching.
Then when you have an idea, then you need to use the right words that going get people to follow that idea. You can have the best idea in the world but if you don’t know how to communicate it properly, then it’s probably not going to happen. Steve Jobs spent hours on hours perfecting his keynote speeches because he knew if he used the right words, then more people would be incline to buy Apple products. Nobody since Jobs in the Tech industry has given such great presentations since. I can’t remember the last time I wanted to watch an Apple keynote presentation since Jobs passed away.
If we can learn how to do both, then we can change the world. First you need to get really good ideas and that is going to come from consuming information. I read a lot and listening to a lot of podcasts because I’m trying to get new ideas that I can add to what I’m doing. Then I try to figure out what are the best words I can use to make my idea a reality. Sometimes those words are questions that you need to ask and sometimes they are answers to questions that need to be answered. This is going to take some practice but if you know how to do it right, then you can inspire action. When I do my coaching, I don’t just give answers to my clients, I want to them to figure out what is the best answer for them. I just have to give them the best information to make an informed decision. I could tell them something but that might not be the answer they are looking for. So when you ask questions, don’t say another thing, let the other person take some time to answer the question. Then whatever answer they came up with, it changed their world.
So when you start to hear people communicate, pay attention to the words they are using and see which ones are very powerful and which ones could use improvement. Then start adopting new words for yourself so you can starting changing your world for the better.
That’s it for today’s episode, and to summarize it, no matter what people tell you, word and ideas can change the world. Both are crucial and you can’t have one without the other. So look for ways to be a better communicator by the words you use and the questions that you ask. This can better ensure that your ideas can become a reality. If you want to watch the final rap battle to analyze it, just go to the show notes at growwithjoe.me/episdoe194. There is explicit language in the video so just be aware. You also have the power to change the world, but make sure you’re using the right ideas and words to make it happen.
So in your journal, ask yourself, am I using the right words and ideas to change my world for the better? If you want to get a promotion, what some words that I can use to make me more competitive for a promotion? Do I have the right ideas that will give me a better life? After you write you answer, just reflect for five to ten minutes on what your wrote and then decide how you need to proceed forward with you life? Do you need to make a change or continue down the same path. Hopefully you find the right answer that will lead you to the place you want to be in life.
