I’m also the Grow With Joe founder, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we will talk about how to gain control over one’s life requires someone requires them to gain control over one’s mind. When we don’t control our minds, then many negative things will happen in our lives. Now that I’m 34 years old, I feel more confident about life because I’ve been working at it for a long time. And I feel that journaling has been my biggest secret weapon. For the past couple of years, I write down my goals and what I want to work towards. I write down what I’m grateful for, the most important thing to work on, and how I feel.
I really value this self-reflection because it gives me focus and clarity about life. It allows me to confront my weaknesses and self-limiting beliefs that can be holding me back. Then I start working on these things so I can build up my self-mastery. Once I built up my self-mastery to a certain point, then came the absolute freedom that I’m feeling today. I work extremely hard on my self-development. I read I work out, and I journal. What gives me this freedom is that I designed my life to don’t need that much stuff. I live in Medellin, Colombia, as a digital nomad, and it costs about $1000 per month to live here. And with my business, I only have to work about 8 hours a month to pay for all my expenses.
This then gives me the freedom to do self-care and to work on my dreams. After I do my self-care in the morning, then I get to work. I do my financial planning, development coaching, working on this podcast, FB Lives, editing my books, and working on a television script. I used to do the 9-5, and I’m never going to go back. It was a lot of hard work in my 20s, but now I feel I have control over my life. And I couldn’t have this control over my life if I didn’t have control over my mind.
My mind allows me to do the uncomfortable stuff to control my environment and the voices in my head that say that I’m not worthy. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and start doubting what I’m doing but then journaling and doing my self-care routine allow me to keep going after my dreams. This journey has not always been easy, but I’m glad I’m working on myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually over the last 9 years.
I think, as people, we should strive for self-mastery. Be the best person we can be in the areas that we want to be great at. This way, we don’t waste our time, and we don’t become traps in a system that really doesn’t benefit us. I worked as a Federal Employee, and that job is not for me. I felt that I didn’t have control over my life, and the security that they provided was a price that was too expensive to pay because the cost would be my sanity and dreams. The discipline to establish control of one’s self creates freedom. There will be many distractions and attempts to make things work, but things will start clicking after a while, and then there will be no better feeling.
And that’s it for today’s episode. To summarize it, he who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others. If you want to have control over your environment and have the ability to influence others, we first must strive for self-mastery. There can deception of control in our environment, but there will pop up things that will make us question what we are actually doing with our lives. As humans, we are very good at dealing with suffering, but suffering is needless. Suffering can give us a sense of security because there is a certainty. Uncertainty can cause pain, but pain can instruct us on how to be a better person. Both feelings are painful, but one is definitely better than the other. Once self-mastery is reached, there is no better feeling, but it’s a feeling that will only last for a little bit. So we can’t take it easy and cruise. As Leonardo da Vinci said, we need to constantly work on ourselves to always maintain dominion over ourselves.
