Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances. At the same time, you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day.” In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the Grow With Joe founder, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we will talk about how life is going to be a constant challenge, but this is what we should want in life. One of the big reasons I hated working in my 9-5 was that life was not challenging in the way I wanted it to be. My job as an office manager was pretty easy, and I didn’t really see a future. I asked myself, do I want to stay in the building for the rest of my life, and the answer was no.
So then, I decided to become a financial advisor. And this was tough, but I’m so glad I heard this one quote by Jim Rohn where he said, “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.” And this is a motto that I live by. Once things start getting tough, I ask myself, what can I do to get better.
And I noticed that the bigger goals that I go after, the harder things are getting. It requires more planning, more risk-taking, and more collaboration. The easy days were in the past. I remember being in Marine Corps boot camp and thinking it was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. Now I could go through boot camp with a breeze because I’m mentally tougher. Boot camp is really about building up mental toughness more than physical toughness.
So the easy days were really yesterday. Today is a new challenge, and if I want to become better as a person, then I can’t wish things were easier. I need to figure out how to become better. And since I keep this mindset, I’m not disappointed by life when it’s hard because I know this is how life is supposed to be like. It’s like telling the sun not to rise, which is a useless wish because the sun will do what it wants to do. So I have to learn to work with my environment to use it to help me reach my goals.
This perception is much better to have, and it’s more beneficial. In the second year of running my own financial planning and development coaching business, and the second year is kicking my butt, I was not expecting covid, but it’s is what it is. All I can do is focusing on being better than my environment. If I do this, then I’ll have control over my life, giving me the freedom that I desire. But then I can’t let my mind get lazy. Life will show me that it’s not as easy as I want it to be.
And that’s it for today’s episode. To summarize it, the easy day was yesterday. This is the motto in the Navy SEALS, and when someone goes through their training programs, they let the recruits know that the easy day was yesterday. A majority of folks end up dropping because they can’t keep up. Now, most of life is not going to be as grueling as the Navy SEALS, but life can knock us down, and we need to have the mental fortitude to get back up and keep moving forward until we reach our goals. I still have a ways to go, but I’ll keep getting better and keep in mind that the easy day was yesterday.
