Hi Everyone, welcome to the You’re Daily Cup of Joe Podcast, with your host Joe Bautista. In this podcast, my goal is to give you quick lessons that you can reflect on in your journal to grow yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and have a better career, better relationships, and better personal finances. At the same time, you enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
I’m also the author of the book “More You Know, More You Grow: How to Get Better Every Day.” In this book, I wrote down over 30 tips to help you grow in those four cornerstones. I’m also the Grow With Joe founder, where I combine self-development coaching and financial planning for Latino Professionals.
In today’s episode, we will talk about how the solution to one thing is not one thing and how it takes many things. Back in college at Portland State for myself, I studied Public Health because I thought I wanted to become a physical therapist. Still, then I sucked at chemistry and decided to pursue health care administration. While I was taking my epidemiology class, we learned about the spider-web technique.
You write down the problem in the middle, then write down the issues that can affect that problem. Then you write issues that can be affecting the issues, and there might be more than two issues affecting that problem, and they might interconnect with another problem. Then, in the end, you see the spider web of issues that need to be resolved to overcome the problem that we’re having.
My developing coaching business is based on this one John Wooden quote, where he said you’re outer circle success will never surpass your inner circle success. And then I heard from James Altucher that we need to grow ourselves Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, and Spiritually. Then I saw in my mind that if you grow each of the four cornerstones, then you won’t get one plus one plus one plus one equals four. You can get a number much higher than four if you work on the right things within your inner circle.
This applies to my career as a financial planner, as well. I’m much more valuable as a financial planner now than I was 6 years ago. I know cash management techniques, financial forecasting, investment strategies, risk management, estate planning, retirement planning, and tax planning. It took a while to build up my skills, but I’m exponentially more valuable because of these skills plus other soft skills.
The key thing about life is not to think about what is the one big thing to make me better, but the many little things that can help me get better. This will require more thinking and planning, but one minute of planning saves us ten minutes of execution time.
For myself, instead of going into my day being reactive, I create a schedule, and I see which are the little things that I need to work on to help me reach my goals. This concept applies to relationships, careers, hobbies, and a bunch of other things. So think about the thing you’re working on, and instead of seeing the one tree, take a step back so you can see how the whole forest is doing. This should help you out a lot more in life.
And that’s it for today’s episode. To summarize it, the sum of its parts is greater than the whole. So don’t look for the one big thing to make your life better because that will take a long time or you need to be extremely lucky. If you’re trying to put all your money into a lottery ticket, and win the big prize, then it’s doubtful that it’s going to happen. The joy of thinking about winning might last a week, but after your numbers aren’t announced, then the dream is over. To reach your success, then working on many little things will help you get to your destination faster. Slow and steady wins the race. So start studying and practicing on your many little skills to help you get a good life.
